Having a dog as a pet can feel like having an additional family member. Dogs can bring joy, companionship, love, comfort, and laughter to a home, making them the ideal family pet. Some breeds are perfect for families with young children due to their friendly and patient nature. Dr Julie Hunt, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, told The Pioneer Woman that a family-friendly dog breed should be able to tolerate children’s behaviour, even if they’re being loud or boisterous.
She further stated: “In other words, it should be a calm dog, not an anxious one, and one that has a tolerant personality.” While there are certain breeds that make the best family pets, Dr Hunt said the best dogs are those that have been socialised since they were puppies and live in a home where both the pets and children are aware of boundaries. However, there are certain breeds that are more easygoing, gentle, patient and affectionate, which makes them perfect for both first-time dog owners and families.

14. Border Collie
Collies are renowned for their intelligence, loyalty, protectiveness and calm demeanour without being too overwhelming.
Their patience and affection make them ideal for families. Collies also require a lot of exercise, making them perfect for active families.
However, it’s worth noting that these dogs are also high-energy and have a herding instinct, necessitating regular physical and mental stimulation.

11. English Mastiff
The English Mastiff may appear intimidating, but they’re big, friendly giants that are calm, tolerant and affectionate.
According to Dr Hunt, the breed is “essentially furniture”, meaning it’s happy for children to climb and cuddle it while remaining patient.
It’s worth noting that due to their size, they may not be suitable for very small children or small households, as they can easily knock over small children and ornaments.
