Ashes day three LIVE – Stokes worry, Australia batting, England trail | Cricket | Sport

England are once again up against it as they prepare to resume the second Ashes Test against Australia. Despite a century from Joe Root – his first on Australian soil – the tourists have already given away a lead in the first innings. They trail by 44 runs with the Aussies also having four wickets remaining. Australia reached 378-6 at the close on day two after England had totted-up 334 all out from their first dig – with Root (138no) leading the way.

Jake Weatherald (72), Marnus Labuschagne (65) and Steve Smith (61) – who has been involved in a war of words with former England spinner Monty Panesar before and during this series – all hit half-centuries for Australia. That’s as wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey remains 46no at the crease. Before turning their attention to the second innings, and potentially clawing their way back into the contest at The Gabba, England must first bowl out their hosts. However, in order to do that, they will have to catch better than they did on the second day – Will Jacks aside.
