Beginning his list, Amir said he would never own a rottweiler due to their strength and powerful protective instincts. He explained: “If you don’t socialise them, train them from a young age, and give them very strong leadership, they can become aggressive.” He added that many first-time owners find it difficult to manage them, which can lead to behavioural problems.
Next, he said he would never suggest a Jack Russell for a novice dog owner due to their intense hunting drive. He explained: “Because Jack Russells are small dogs, many people underestimate them.” He continued by saying they possess “huge personalities” and a high prey drive, and can develop serious behavioural issues if they don’t receive sufficient mental stimulation.
Describing Siberian huskies as “obstinate” and “escape artists”, Amir said some people bring them home without grasping how much effort is required. He said: “This dog is like a big toddler, and if you know that going in, great. But a lot of people don’t really understand what a husky is, and they end up regretting it.”
The fourth breed Amir cautioned against was Akitas. He described these dogs as “super independent” and warned they can become quite controlling. He advised that owners must be certain this type of temperament suits them and that they possess the time and patience required for proper training before welcoming one into their home.
Lastly, he stated that the Belgian malinois is “not a normal dog, not a normal pet”, instead characterising the breed as a “machine”. He elaborated: “This dog is not just an add-on to your life – this is your life. They require an extraordinary amount of physical and mental stimulation simply to remain content. You must research this breed thoroughly and ensure this is what you desire before acquiring one.”
Responding to his post, one user remarked: “Belgian malinois can jump walls like they’re nothing.” Another commented: “I wanted a rottweiler so bad, then a husky… after this I guess I’ll settle for a chow chow that can’t protect me.”
A third user noted: “I would add German shepherds and Dutch shepherds.” Another wrote: “Belgian malinois – even I wouldn’t get one, and I’ve had a husky, German shepherd, labrador and flat-coated retriever.”
