A ‘powerful’ and ‘masterful’ period drama featuring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer is airing on Film4 this evening.
The Last Duel, which came out in 2021, transports audiences to 1386 France for the nation’s final legally sanctioned trial by combat.
The film follows knight Jean de Carrouges (portrayed by Matt Damon) as he battles his one-time friend Jacques Le Gris (portrayed by Adam Driver) after Jean’s wife, Marguerite (portrayed by Jodie Comer), accuses Jacques of raping her.
The consequences are severe, with Marguerite facing execution by burning should Jean be defeated.
Helmed by Gladiator director Ridley Scott, the film recounts the events through the eyes of all three central characters. The narrative is structured in three chapters, each exposing a distinct and frequently contradictory perspective of the assault and what followed, with Marguerite’s version positioned as the authentic account, illuminating the brutal realities faced by women in medieval times when they were regarded as possessions.

The film enjoys robust approval from audiences with 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, with numerous reviews singling out Jodie Comer as the standout performer.
Critics have also emphasised the film’s moving portrayal of women’s experiences throughout history, with some labelling it ‘masterful’ and ‘gripping’, reports the Mirror.
One five-star review noted: “I’ve seen a lot of stories acted out from this era of tone but none dig this deep into the lack of rights a woman had in that era of living especially for women.
“Thank you for show the process we’ve paid for man’s desire for power through the centuries. Thank you for striking such bold story!”.
Another viewer praised: “Another masterfully directed epic from Riddley Scott and a great performance from the entire cast. This is well written story of power, ego and the place of women in medieval society.

“Jodie Comer shines in every project she’s in. The best Ridley Scott movie of the decade, much better than House of Gucci, Napoleon and Gladiator II,” a third enthusiast declared.
A fourth observer said: “The way they told the story from three different points of view was really interesting, but the actual duel itself was wild and amazing to look at, even though it was very violent.
“All I can say is that THE LAST DUEL is one of those movies that will definitely get your attention.”
An extensive review wrote: “Story: 9/10 – A gripping and tense medieval drama about honor, betrayal, and injustice. The story doesn’t shy away from harsh realities, making it emotionally heavy but compelling.
“Structure / Writing: 8.5/10 – Told from three perspectives, which adds depth and nuance, though some parts feel slightly repetitive. Still, it’s a clever way to explore truth and perception.
“Visuals / Atmosphere: 9.5/10 – The film nails the look and feel of 14th-century France. Gritty battlefields, cold stone halls, and muddy landscapes make you feel the weight of the era.
“Soundtrack: 8.5/10 – The score supports the tension and emotion without overpowering it. It’s subtle but effective.”
The review went on to say: “Performances: 9/10 – Jodie Comer shines as Marguerite, giving the film its emotional heart. Matt Damon and Adam Driver are intense and believable, fully embodying their characters. Overall: 8.8/10.”
The Last Duel airs on Film4 on Wednesday 28 January at 11.05pm.
