A hunting dog met a small house cat and had a surprising reaction, leaving his owner floored but amused. The dog in question is a German shorthaired pointer (GSP), a versatile gun dog adept at hunting and retrieving across both land and water.

They’re frequently described as “noble-looking” dogs, thanks to their medium-sized, athletic build; distinctive patched and ticked coat which is typically a mixture of browns and white; and their soft, floppy ears. They’re extremely energetic yet also affectionate and are generally recommended for seasoned owners who may be better prepared to manage their powerful prey drive.

German shorthaired pointers are recognised and admired for their hunting abilities but they’re often recommended as a perfect choice for a family pet. Pet MD states: “Along with being well-loved hunting companions, German shorthaired pointers can make great family dogs who are always ready for any outdoor activity.”

One GSP owner received quite a surprise while visiting his brother-in-law’s house with his cherished dog, Pascal, in tow only for him to have a dramatic response to the cat living there – and he captured it all on camera.

In the clip, Pascal can be seen descending a flight of stairs cautiously and arriving onto a split landing. There, a ginger house cat sits which stops the dog in his tracks.

People downstairs shout up, enquiring about what’s happening, and the owner confirms Pascal is “terrified of your [their] ginger cat”.

As the owner approaches the feline, the dog retreats towards the first staircase to evade the cat and ignores repeated “here” instructions.

When another person lifts the cat up, Pascal comes back down the steps but halts on the landing once more. His owner calls “here” but Pascal stays wary before being labelled “a big soft boy”.

Overlaying the footage, which was posted on TikTok, the owner included text stating: “my 30kg hunting hound meeting my brother-in-law’s 0.5kg cat”.

In the caption, he simply wrote: “what a baby”. In the comments section, fellow TikTok users were eager to share their opinions.

One person said: “To be fair.. it is an orange one! They can be unpredictable”. Another noted: “Cats have unbeatable confidence”.

A third said: “Honestly cats are the MMA fighters of the animal world cuz they be standing up to bears dogs etc they do not get scared”.

A fourth stated: “Pointers are so dramatic”, to which Pascal’s owner responded: “such baby”.

Someone else commented: “Pointers are so soft and gentle. My three cats all love her and go to her for cuddles or head bops”.

One TikTok user shared: “My 25kg GSP cross spaniel was terrified of my less than 1kg foster kitten and wouldn’t come into the room if it was there”.

Another joked: “As an orange cat owner, that is a smart dog”.
