Residents warned ‘stay indoors’ after suspected cyanide leak | US | News

Residents inCalifornia have been told to “shelter in place” as several agencies work to reduce a possible  cyanide leak. The “shelter in place” alert has been lifted.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department said it is assisting Sonoma County Fire District with a hazardous materials incident south of the City of Santa Rosa on Wednesday, January 28.

KRON4 News reported that Sonoma County officials said a hazmat team, as well as 45 county personnel, are at the scene.

Officials said agencies have received several reports of odours.

Cyanide is often described as having an odor of bitter almonds. The smell is often also decribed as similar to a swimming pool’s changing room.

The origin of the odour is believed to be in a commercial area near a recycle facility.

Residents were urged to remain indoors and keeps doors and windows shut.

The City of Santa Rosa Fire Department said in a post on Facebook that there are currently no threats to the city.

There have been no reports of illnesses or injuries, but there are emergency medics at the scene as a precautionary measure.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The Santa Rosa Fire Department is assisting Sonoma County Fire District with a Hazardous Materials Incident south of the City of Santa Rosa in the 3000 block of Santa Rosa Avenue.”
