Fredrik Moeller update after Winter Olympic star airlifted from crash | Other | Sport

He suffered his injury after a horrific, high-speed crash on a training slope before the beginning of the games in Milan-Cortina.  The Nordic star lost control while skiing in the first downhill training session of the winter games.  The news of his shoulder was provided by Norway’s national team doctor Trond Floberghagen. There remains a chance the winter Olympic gold medallist favourite will be able to race in Milan-Cortina, due to the fact he did not suffer any other serious injuries when he fell.

Nevertheless, it will be a tough ask for him to recover in time for Saturday’s race.  While they are not looking too far ahead, there does appear to be some hope he can compete.

Dr Floberghagen said: “The treatment has gone well, and the health team will now begin further rehabilitation. It is too early to see anything more about Fredrik’s further participation in the Olympics.”

When he received medical treatment, the worst fears were eased when Moeller was spotted sitting up in the snow as he received medical treatment. He was then transported by helicopter to the nearest medical centre for treatment on his shoulder.

The biggest relief for Moeller and all winter sports fans was his ability to slow himself down before hitting the safety net of the course. Skiing fans will be hoping and praying he is given the go ahead to compete in Saturday’s downhill race.

Bormio has been a happy hunting ground for Moeller in the past, despite his accident. On Christmas Eve in 2024, he recorded his one and only World Cup victory to date on the slope in the Super-G event.

While the immediate focus is on Saturday’s downhill event, he will also have an eye on being cleared for the Super-G race on February 11. He has already recovered from one serious injury to be fit for the Olympics.

He fractured three vertebrae and lost some of his front teeth during the first World Cup downhill at Val Gardena. In December, on the Saslong Course, he misjudged a jump in the ‘Camel Humps’ section of the course.
