Gerwyn Price believes that clinching the largest prize money in darts would not transform his life. The recent World Darts Championship saw the winner’s share double to a whopping £1million, a sum that Luke Littler secured at Alexandra Palace.

Price, who was seeded ninth at the tournament, suffered an unexpected second round defeat to Wesley Plaisier. However, ‘The Iceman’ bounced back by reaching three consecutive semi-finals, including his loss to Littler at the World Masters earlier this month. The 2021 World Champion has claimed seven major PDC titles during his distinguished career, with his most recent victory coming at the World Series of Darts Finals in 2022. Despite the wait for his next major win, Price is adamant that securing the new seven-figure prize at the World Championships wouldn’t change his personality.

“It is big but I’ve built a platform now where £1m is a lot of money, it is, but it wouldn’t change anything about me,” Price declared on the Tops and Tales Darts podcast. “It would just go into the pot and just make me be able to carry on doing what I’m doing for a little bit longer.

“I wouldn’t go and buy something for £1m. My life would not change. Obviously, it’s what we’re in it for, we’re in it to earn a living and earn as much money as possible but as much as it’s a good prize, it just wouldn’t change.

“I don’t think it’s changed Luke’s life; it wouldn’t change Michael’s life. Anyone, I think, in the top 16, 24 in the world, it’s a good bonus but it wouldn’t change their lives or change the way they are.”

He continued: “Money makes things easier. It does change a lot of people but I like to think that it hasn’t changed me anyway.”

Price currently sits 12th on the PDC Order of Merit with £551,000 in prize money. A chunk of this total comes from his performances at the World Masters, where he pocketed £30,000.

There has been previous speculation about the Welshman potentially retiring from darts in the near future. However, Price has quashed these rumours by outlining his plans for the next decade.

“I’ve signed with Red Dragon now for the next 10 years, which I’ve thankfully just signed, until I’m 50,” he revealed on the Tops and Tales Darts podcast. “So I’m definitely playing for another 10 years.

“I say, ‘Oh, I’ll retire when I’m 50’, but things might change and I might not want to do that. But I’ll never, ever put the darts down completely, I don’t think.”

In January, Price was unveiled as one of the eight competitors in Premier League Darts. He suffered defeat in his opening match against Luke Humphries in Newcastle earlier this week, with Michael van Gerwen emerging victorious on the first night.

The Premier League action continues in Antwerp next week, where Price will be hoping to secure his first win of the season. He’s set to go head-to-head with recent world championship runner-up Gian van Veen.
