A young woman froze to death after slipping off a trail while hiking New York’s highest peak with her dog. Brianna Mohr, 21, was found by rescuers after over six hours she contacted emergency services for help, officials said on Wednesday.
According to New York state police officials, she dialed 911 while clinging to the side of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks at 3pm EST last Thursday. However, the rescue discovered her after six hours, ar around 9pm EST, by which she had died of hypothermia, the police said.
The police said in a statement: “At approximately 9:00 p.m., Forest Rangers located Brianna L. Mohr, age 21, of Brick, NJ, along with her dog. Mohr was showing no signs of life and was pronounced deceased near the summit of Mount Marcy. The dog was uninjured and rescued.
“New York State Police and the Essex County Coroner’s Office were notified of the incident. An autopsy was scheduled for February 14, 2026, at Glens Falls Hospital and was conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Sikirica. The cause of death was determined to be hypothermia.”

Mohr’s mother, Stephanie West, posted a photo tribute to her daughter on Valentine’s Day, the day her autopsy was completed.
“I am so lost,” West wrote on Facebook.
On Monday, the 21-year-old’s brother, Ryan, shared a heartbreaking message about Mohr, who graduated from Brick Memorial High School in 2022.
According to Asbury Park Press, he wrote: “You were the best friend and sister I could have ever asked for. You are the reason I am the person I am….I love you forever Bri. Rest in peace.”
