The Dabbling Duck: Inside pub much-loved by royals

Tucked away in the postcard-perfect village of Great Massingham sits what I can only describe as the best pub in Norfolk – and perhaps one of Britain’s most quietly remarkable rural gems. The Dabbling Duck isn’t just another country pub. It’s a place woven into local life, with a story of resilience, community spirit and royal connections that make it feel truly special.

Over the years, the pub has welcomed the likes of Prince William and Princess Catherine, as well as Prince Harry who dropped in while spending time near the Sandringham estate, just a short drive away.

Prince William has also been described in past reports as being fond of the pub during his time in Norfolk.

The venue has attracted notable faces beyond the royal circle too, with figures such as Sir Alan Sugar among those known to have visited – a testament to its reputation that stretches far beyond the village green.

What makes The Dabbling Duck stand out isn’t just who has passed through its doors, but how it survived.

Local accounts and the pub’s own history note that it once faced closure, before the community rallied to keep it alive – with local farmers stepping in to help secure its future.

It was later taken on by a local couple with hospitality experience, and since then the pub has gone from strength to strength, becoming a true pillar of the community.

You can feel that history the moment you walk in. There’s a warm, bustling atmosphere – the kind that reminds you pubs really are at the heart of British culture.

Sitting waiting for my food, I watched families, friends and locals chatting with ease. It felt like stepping back in time, in the best possible way – a reminder of the sense of togetherness that can sometimes feel lost elsewhere, but not here.

Then there’s the food. And honestly, it was exceptional.

Dining here felt less like a village pub meal and more like stepping into a five-star restaurant in the city.

The meat was beautifully cooked and incredibly succulent, the seasonal vegetables perfectly prepared, and the sauces – especially alongside the rump steak, which was quite literally mouth-watering.

It’s refined without being pretentious, comforting yet elevated, and the kind of cooking that leaves a lasting impression.

And just when I thought I’d seen the best of it, I discovered the accommodation.

When I think of a traditional B&B, I imagine something cosy and simple. But stepping into the neighbouring Garrick House, a charming building just beside the pub – was a genuine surprise.

Behind the door lies what can only be described as quiet luxury. The interiors feel timeless yet elegant, with classic furniture, thoughtful details and a subtle modern touch.

My room featured a roll-top bath positioned at the end of a comfortable king-size bed – the sort of detail you’d expect in a boutique hotel, alongside shelves of books and beautifully curated décor.

The bathroom was equally impressive, with a spacious double shower and sleek finishes that balanced comfort with style.

Perhaps most surprising of all is that a stay here won’t break the bank.

Sandringham

Despite the quality of the rooms, the food and the overall experience, it remains refreshingly affordable – making it accessible rather than exclusive.

Whether you’re drawn by its royal associations, its community story or simply the promise of outstanding hospitality, The Dabbling Duck more than delivers.

It certainly has my seal of approval: a must-stay destination quietly tucked behind the village green, where history, warmth and exceptional food come together in one unforgettable Norfolk escape.
