NATO fighter jets have been scrambled after Russia launched a “massive” combined drone and ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, with air defences activated across the region in response.
Three drones and two ballistic missiles were reported to have been fired at the Ukrainian capital. Kyiv Mayor Klitschko has reported explosions in the city, though these are yet to be independently verified. No casualties have so far been reported.
Poland activates defences
In a significant escalation, Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces announced it had scrambled jets and raised its air defence systems to maximum readiness.
In a statement posted to its official X account, the command said: “Attention. In connection with another massive attack by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine in recent times, conducted using air assault means, the operation of Polish and allied aviation has commenced in our airspace.
“In accordance with the applicable procedures, the Operational Commander of the RSZ has activated the necessary forces and means at his disposal.
“Duty fighter jets and an early warning aircraft are operating, while ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance have reached a state of maximum readiness.”
The statement continues: “These actions are of a preventive nature and are aimed at securing the airspace and its protection, particularly in areas adjacent to the threatened zones.
“The Operational Command of the RSZ is monitoring the current situation, and the subordinate forces and means remain ready for immediate response.”
Residents told to take shelter
Ukraine Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko confirmed the attack was under way and urged residents to remain in shelters.
Writing on Telegram, he said: “The enemy is attacking the city with strike UAVs and ballistic missiles. Air defense systems are operational. Stay in shelters until the all-clear signal!”
