Barclays £300 ‘limit’ rule in place for account holders across UK | Personal Finance | Finance

People who bank with Barclays could be stopped from accessing their money at cash machines if they ignore a certain rule. Anyone who tries to withdraw more than the £300 cap will be blocked.

Rules are in place to protect both banks and customers who trust these businesses to handle their money. Banks have an obligation to help prevent crime, so they have measures in place to prevent accounts from dispensing too much cash in one go.

The Barclays website states that withdrawal limits are common for most of its accounts. People can go into branches, where available, to make larger withdrawals without worrying about a price cap.

The rules vary across the different types of bank accounts that Barclays offers customers. For most day-to-day users, the limit will be set

You can often lower your daily limit in your banking app for added security. People without access to the online app or who would prefer help with this can call the bank’s customer service line to request a lower limit or get help at a local branch.

For people taking large sums of money from their account in one go, staff at the branch will usually ask for a form of ID, such as a driving licence or passport, and need the customer to answer some questions about what the money is for.

A spokesperson for the banking company said: “It would be better to avoid leaving one of our branches with large amounts of money. If you can, make any payments through Online Banking, using our app or by making a transfer in a branch.”

As of late 2025, some banks are introducing specific, stricter, or enhanced security-focused withdrawal limits for customers aged 67 and over to prevent fraud. The restrictions apply across major high-street banks like Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Halifax, RBS, and Nationwide.

Barclays still has dozens of its fully-staffed branches open across the UK. People can find their nearest here. For people who do not live in an area served by a traditional bank, they may still be able to access services in alternative ways.

Barclays Local is a scheme which uses community spaces with a van that arrives and stays for a set time each week. Staff can help face-to-face with things like managing money and banking with the free Barclays app.

People with a personal or business Barclays account can do much of their day-to-day banking, including paying in and taking out cash, at a Post Office. For more information, go online to the Barclays website here.
