While there, they stayed in the £3,000-a-night Royal Suite at the St Regis in Amman. On the 15th floor of the five-star hotel, the 363 sq m suite has three bathrooms, a full kitchen, a living area, a 24-hour butler, and a terrace with views over the city. The hotel says it “embodies refined luxury tailored for royalty, it promises and unforgettable bespoke experience”. The St Regis adds: “It’s rare one-of-a-kind design envelops you in luxury, making you feel like royalty while providing the perfect sanctuary for relaxation – your home away from home, where every moment feels extraordinary.” The Prince and Princess of Wales previously stayed in the room while attending the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan, a friend of William’s.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were invited by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO. The couple are believed to have covered the cost of the trip, which is expected to be over £100,000.
While there, they did not meet senior members of Jordan’s royal family. King Abdullah and Crown Prince Hussein, friends of King Charles and Prince William, were meeting with the Indonesian president.
The couple met less senior members of the royal family, including Princess Basma Bint Talal and Princess Ghida Talal, in their capacities as charity patrons.
They began their trip with a visit to the Zaatari refugee camp, where people had arrived after fleeing Gaza. They were pictured playing football.
A source at the Foreign Office told the Mail: “The Duke and Duchess were visiting Jordan as private citizens; the UK government was not involved in arranging or facilitating their programme.
“An event was held by the ambassador and to for the end of fasting and Dr Tedros invited the Duke and Duchess as he was organising the trip, all requests regarding the visit should go to their team.”
