Joachim Low has denied claims that Ghana are set to name him as their new head coach for the World Cup ahead of this summer’s tournament, where they are set to face England. Reports emerging from Ghana suggest the 66 year old is anticipated to put pen to paper on a short-term deal centred.
it has been reported that the ‘last 24 hours’ of negotiations have been intense, but personal terms are close to being finalised. Low is reportedly set to earn ‘€150,000 (£131,000) per month’ under the agreement. Ghana parted ways with Otto Addo last week after four successive defeats left the Black Stars languishing 74th in the world rankings.
In a statement, the Ghana Football Association said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars, Otto Addo, with immediate effect. The association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours. The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”
While the Ghana FA have made no public announcement regarding a replacement, reports have claimed Low will be taking the reins for this summer’s competition. The German tactician, who guided his nation between 2006 and 2021, memorably led them to World Cup triumph in 2014 having achieved a third-place finish at the 2010 edition held in South Africa.
Low has been absent from management since 2021 but has acknowledged receiving ‘several offers’ to return to the dugout over recent years.
Speaking to Kicker last year, he said: “I wasn’t really interested in returning. However, now I’m ready to consider opportunities that leave a good impression. I have extensive experience with national teams and preparing for major tournaments.”
He also conceded he ought to have departed the Germany role three years sooner. He said: “I should have stepped aside after the 2018 World Cup to make way for someone with fresh ideas who could better manage the transition from the ‘golden’ generation.”
Ghana are placed in Group L where they will meet England, Croatia, and Panama. Their opening fixture will be against Panama on June 18 before the clash against Thomas Tuchel’s side on June 23.
