The Met Office has issued an updated weather warning for parts of the UK as Storm Dave approaches. A warning was initially issued for the Easter weekend (April 4 and 5), but the forecaster has now published an updated yellow wind warning with conditions linked to the storm.

The warning is covering parts of North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, Yorkshire and Humber. All local areas affected are listed below. Intense winds are expected to lash the regions, and the warning is in place from 5pm on Saturday until Sunday 7am.

The updated Yellow warning for wind was announced at 9:54am on Friday, April 3. A Met Office forecast said: “A rapidly deepening area of low pressure, Storm Dave, will cross Scotland on Saturday night before clearing into the North Sea on Sunday.

“Whilst some uncertainty remains in the exact track and shape of Storm Dave, a spell of strong southwesterly winds is expected. Gusts of 50-60 mph are expected fairly widely, with 60-70 mph in more exposed locations.

“The strongest winds are expected during Saturday evening, where there is a small chance of gusts of 70-80 mph briefly, particularly in northern England and southern Scotland. Large waves may lead to some dangerous conditions around windward coasts.”

In its warnings, the Met Office also said: “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do: consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

The Met Office forecast for the weekend read: “Storm Dave brings a spell of very strong winds of up to 90mph later Saturday into Easter Sunday morning which may cause some damage and travel disruption,” the Met Office said. The areas covered by the warnings include Northern Ireland, the north of the UK from Scotland to the north east of England but also Manchester and Liverpool, and parts of north west Wales. The Met Office has also issued a “danger to life” warning for these areas.

“Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible,” the forecaster said, also adding “injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties”.
