A professional dog trainer has named the three breeds he would advise against owning. Garret Wing, founder of American Standard Dog Training, explained that certain breeds are simply unsuitable for families or prove particularly challenging to handle.
Garret, who boasts more than 20 years of experience training police dogs for both street work and competition, noted that there is even one breed capable of “killing an entire pack of wolves”. The trainer’s comments come from a 2023 video on his YouTube channel which has amassed more than 2,800 subscribers. He highlighted three XL dog breeds that prospective owners may wish to steer clear of.
Tibetan Mastiff
The first breed, he stated, they’d “never recommend as professional dog trainers,” is the Tibetan Mastiff.
He said: “Starting with number three, the Tibetan Mastiff. A monster of a dog that is capable of killing an entire pack of wolves.
“So, do you think you need that in your home, with your small children? Not necessarily.
“They’re also known for being very stubborn and difficult to train. Beautiful animals, probably not for you.”
Great Dane
While these are “sweet dogs” that can make wonderful pets, Garret warned that they will completely transform your lifestyle.
Owners of this particular breed may discover they need to reorganise their entire home, purchase an extra-large crate, and carefully consider furniture arrangement and suitable outdoor spaces.
He added: “We’re talking about a dog that is just too big for most homes.”
Cane Corso
Topping the list of breeds he would not recommend is the Cane Corso.
The Italian mastiff breed is renowned for guarding livestock and was historically employed for herding cattle and hunting large prey.
Garret stated that the breed is unsuitable for families, saying: “And then last but not least, we’re talking about the number one dog breed we do not recommend for families, the Cane Corso.
“That is too much dog for about 99.9% of folks, and that is coming from us, not only as professional dog trainers but owners of the Cane Corso. They are absolute battle tanks, and you don’t need that in your suburban neighbourhood.”
