Banking giant Santander is poised to shut 40 branches across the UK within weeks. The bank revealed in January that it was scaling back its high street presence by a total of 44 locations, including four which shut their doors that month.
The lender stated at the time that a further 40 branches would close by the end of May, attributing the move to customers increasingly switching to online services. Santander confirmed that more than nine out of 10 (96%) of all customer transactions were now being carried out via digital platforms.
Santander also disclosed that a total of 291 jobs were at risk as a direct consequence of the planned closures. That announcement came less than 12 months after the Spanish banking giant revealed the shuttering of 95 branches last March, a decision that affected 750 members of staff.
In July 2025, Santander’s then UK chief executive Mike Regnier revealed that around 2,000 jobs had been lost during the preceding year under the bank’s restructuring programme. At that point, he warned that further redundancies “might well be” on the horizon.
Santander stated that affected branches would be replaced by “community bankers” operating through Santander Local stores or shared banking hubs, pledging to maintain access to essential services for customers in areas impacted by the closures.
The next wave of branch closures is now just weeks away. The affected locations are listed below.
