King and Queen US tour LIVE: Star-studded guests arrive for dinner | Royal | News

The King and Queen are set to be honoured at a state dinner with some of the biggest and wealthiest figures to be in attendance.

Golf icon Rory McIlroy and Amazon boss Jeff Bezos are set to feature at the star-studded dinner in Washington, where guests will be served a lavish four-course meal.

Earlier, Donald Trump laid on a ceremonial welcome on the South Lawn of the White House before inviting the King for a private meeting inside the Oval Office.

Charles also addressed a joint meeting of Congress, marking only the second address to such a meeting by a British Monarch following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech at the Capitol in 1991. The King’s speech to Congress reaffirmed the UK and US’s shared democratic values, woven deep into the fabric of both nations over the past 250 years.

He opened the address by referencing the events of Saturday evening, in a spirit of solidarity, sympathy and support, as he brings “the highest regard and friendship of the British people to the people of the United States” in this landmark anniversary year.

The bulk of His Majesty’s speech, written on the advice of the Government, reflected the great challenges, both nationally and internationally, that we currently face. It was seen as a tacit acknowledgement of recent tensions over the Iran war, as the King told both houses that “time and again, our two countries have always found ways to come together”.
