British Gas has handed households a boost of £1,000 each on average and says more will benefit from its money-saving scheme this summer. The major energy supplier is ramping up its Warm & Working Scheme ahead of winter to help tackle rising energy costs.
Through the scheme, thousands more households will be offered free boiler services and energy efficient home upgrades which can help to reduce energy bills during the colder months. The scheme supports households who are financially vulnerable or at risk of fuel poverty by providing practical, in-home improvements that can make a real difference to comfort, safety and energy costs.
British Gas said more than 500 UK households have already received around £500,000 worth of free upgrades through the scheme, which averages to £1,000 per household. But this figure is set to double this summer with plans to support over 1,000 households – including eligible homes that aren’t customers of British Gas.

Through the scheme, British Gas engineers will carry out tailored upgrades in the homes, including boiler servicing, heating system improvements, smart thermostats, radiator upgrades and essential safety checks, such as carbon monoxide detector installations.
All of these measures help homes to run more efficiently and lower the risk of unexpected breakdowns during the colder months.
Keeping your boiler in good working order can help save energy and avoid costly breakdown, while regular servicing keeps heating running efficiently.
According to British Gas, upgrading to an A-rated boiler could save households up to £180 a year on their heating bills.
Gary Booker, managing director at British Gas, said: “We know many households are very concerned about their energy costs, and we want to do everything we can to help.
“By expanding our Warm & Working scheme, we will support more people with practical improvements to make their homes more efficient. We want to give households peace of mind and help them avoid unexpected breakdowns when they need their heating the most.
“This is just one of the ways we are helping those struggling with energy costs – there is lots of support available such as grants and advice we offer through the British Gas Energy Trust. And you don’t need to be a British Gas customer to be eligible for help.”
British Gas will be directly contacting people eligible for the Warm & Working scheme – which is offered to those in receipt of the Warm Home Discount – helping many more households access support faster.
But you don’t need to be an existing British Gas customer to qualify as you can be referred into the scheme through partner organisations or the British Gas Energy Trust if you meet the eligible criteria.
Looking ahead, British Gas plans to expand the scheme further during the 2026–27 period, with the ambition to support more households.
