When moving into an older property, you never quite know what secrets are hiding beneath the surface – whether they’re good or bad.

Usually, homeowners uncover bodged DIY jobs from previous owners, leaving them to clean up the mess years later.

But one woman was stunned after discovering something far more personal while renovating her kitchen.

She explained how she was ripping up the old linoleum flooring when she came across a handwritten letter hidden underneath.

Sharing the story on Reddit, she wrote: “We found a handwritten letter that had never been mailed. It was under the old linoleum in the kitchen.

“A lady was upset about some decisions her son had made and she poured her heart and anger into the letter. It was heartbreaking and I hope they found their way back to being a family.”

Curious about what happened next, the woman decided to do some digging of her own.

Using census records, she tracked down the family surname before eventually finding relatives who still lived nearby.

She added: “They were excited to get the letter and brought me a copy of a photo of the lady standing on the front porch.

“It was taken in the 1940s when her husband went away to war.

“They said the lady was still alive and in her 90s and they were going to take the letter to her in her nursing home.”

The woman admitted she anxiously waited to hear how the elderly woman reacted to being reunited with the long-lost letter, worried it may upset her.

Thankfully, the response was positive.

She explained: “They later told me that despite its contents, she was glad to get the letter. They also told me she is the reason two bedrooms have pine floors instead of white oak like the rest of the house.

“I have wondered since – it’s kind of obvious the pine planks were DIY’d as the ends are not cut evenly.”

Commenting on the emotional discovery, one user wrote: “Thank you for keeping history alive!”

Another shared: “We found bad maths from a carpenter – we opened up a wall and the carpenter had written a very basic calculation for a cut on a board and completely messed it up.

“Explained some of the janky work we had to fix.”

One more user added: “[We found] walnuts… walnuts everywhere.

“We opened something up and I’m pretty sure squirrels have a highway through our house in winter with a takeaway food shop.”
