Award-winning curry house closes doors – serving locals for 35 years

An award-winning London curry house has closed down after 35 years, leaving locals heartbroken. Bayleaf Restaurant in Whetstone had won several awards, including best north London restaurant at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards and the Harden’s Certificate of Achievement for “very high quality” food.

However, founder Tofozzul Miah said that due to changing “dining preferences” in the neighbourhood, he had made the difficult decision to shut after 35 “memorable years”. While the restaurant has closed, they will continue to run a takeaway delivery service.

Mr Miah said: “Dear Customers and Friends, after 35 memorable years on the High Road, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Bayleaf Restaurant.

“We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support you have shown us throughout the decades. It has been our privilege to serve three generations of patrons, creating lasting memories and culinary experiences.

“As the demographics of Whetstone have evolved, so too have the dining preferences in our community. While many establishments may have shifted away from serving real food, we have remained committed to quality and tradition.

“Every moment spent serving the local community has been a joy, and we will cherish the connections we have built with each of you.”

He also pointed to challenges felt across the industry at present.

He wrote: “While we recognise the challenges that micro businesses may face in the future, we remain hopeful for the resilience of our community. Our gratitude extends to all our customers, staff, and supporters over the years.”

Loyal customers were saddened by the news, with one stating: “It was the best Indian when I lived in the area.” Another wrote: “What a huge loss for the industry and whetstone.”

A third said: “Such a shame as the food and the staff were amazing had some wonderful meals and takeaways over the years.”
