Melania Trump stunned guests at the White House Congressional Picnic after stepping onto the Truman Balcony to deliver what she described as “breaking news”.
Addressing lawmakers and their families gathered on the South Lawn, the First Lady interrupted the evening’s festivities to announce that the House had passed the Fostering the Future Act.
The legislation is aimed at supporting children in foster care and improving outcomes for young people transitioning into adulthood.
“I have breaking news. Today, the House passed the Fostering the Future Act,” Melania told the crowd, prompting applause from attendees gathered below the White House balcony.
She then turned her attention to the Senate, urging lawmakers to continue pushing the bill forward.
“Senators, we have momentum,” she said. “Now, it’s your turn to bring the Fostering the Future Act across the finish line.”
The surprise announcement quickly drew attention online, with clips of the moment spreading across social media as supporters praised the First Lady’s advocacy on issues affecting children and families.
Melania has previously focused much of her public work on youth wellbeing and child welfare initiatives, and the latest legislation marks another high-profile push tied to those themes.
The Congressional Picnic, an annual tradition hosted at the White House, brought together members of Congress from both parties for an evening of food, music and speeches hosted by President Donald Trump and the First Lady.
