HM Revenue & Customs has issued warnings to people claiming six benefits. HMRC said it is sending text messages to claimants between May and June to let them know if they can expect a final Working Tax Credit payment.
It comes as six legacy benefits are moved over to Universal Credit (UC). These are: Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Working Tax Credit.
The Department for Work and Pensions is moving everyone on these older benefits over to UC.
UC is the main benefit, and unlike Working Tax Credit, there is no limit to the number of hours you can work while claiming.
People affected by the move from legacy benefits to UC should receive a “Migration Notice” in the post.
HMRC has confirmed that those in receipt of Working Tax Credit who are still due a final payment will be contacted up to June 29.
Payments will be made automatically so claimants do not need to do anything, the same publication reports.
Claimants should beware of scammers sending fake texts. HMRC says it will never ask for personal or financial details in text messages.
The Government department advises people not to open any links included in a message claiming to be from HMRC.
This includes texts offering a tax refund in exchange for personal information. HMRC also cautions against replying to such messages.
