Royal couple announce major royal tour within days | Royal | News

A royal couple have announced they will go on a major royal tour within days. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will be jetting off to Portugal together in June to carry out a number of engagements.

The couple, who are both working royals, will be in Portugal from June 1 until June 3. This means they will be back in time for Peter Phillips’ wedding on June 6. Edward and Sophie’s royal tour in Portugal aims to celebrate the historical ties and modern relationship between the UK and Portugal.

The royals will visit a number of places including Lisbon and Porto.

The couple will also undertake a number of engagements which are important to them and causes they are passionate about.

This includes youth opportunity, sports inclusion and Women, Peace and Security.

Buckingham Palace has said the tour will see Sophie and Edward also visit historic sites reflecting UK– Portugal heritage, as well as meetings with students and community organisations.

The visit has been timed to mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor, which underpins the world’s oldest diplomatic alliance.

The last royal visit to Portugal was in 2011.

This was when King Charles and Queen Camilla, before they were Their Majesties, visited on a royal tour.

Edward and Sophie have carried out a royal trip to Portugal together before, with their last joint visit to the country being in 2005.

The Duke last visited the country in June 2009.
