Wes Streeting didn’t tell a fellow Labour MP that he was planning to throw Keir Starmer’s government into chaos by quitting when the pair of them went to the cinema.
Peter Kyle, the business secretary, had previously said he was heading to the pictures with the former health secretary, so was confident he wasn’t going to resign.
But speaking to Sky News today Mr Kyle said: “He wasn’t planning it at the time, and circumstances change, but he has to answer for that.”
Asked whether he had been taken by surprise, Mr Kyle said: “A lot of circumstances in that moment were shocking because we were in a convulsive period of our politics. “The Labour Party was convulsed by what happened in those elections. It was a stark message.”
