After the drama of the Spygate saga, the Sky Bet Championship play-off final will finally take place this afternoon as Hull City take on Middlesbrough at Wembley.
Southampton defeated Boro in the semifinal – only to be expelled from the competition following the Spygate hearing.
Following an EFL investigation, the Saints were found guilty of a “deplorable” act of putting pressure on a junior member of staff to spy on Middlesbrough ahead of their semi-final.
Middlesbrough reported to the EFL that a member of Southampton staff had spied on a training session on May 7, in breach of league rules, with the EFL charging them the following day.
The focus will now switch to today’s game, with Premier League status and guaranteed riches of at least £200 million awaiting the winner at Wembley.
The Tigers head into this afternoon’s game on the back of a three-game unbeaten run, which includes two victories, while the Teessiders, who finished the regular season seven points better off, are without a win in three.
