Households urged to leave wet towel in beds on Thursday

This week’s weather forecast predicts high temperatures to continue over the coming days, with almost 30 degrees on the way this Thursday. Households have been urged to check out a viral hack to prep for the sweltering heat. It involves dampening a towel before bed, and has been recommended by a psychiatrist and founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine, Alex Dimitriu, MD.

Dr Dimitriu explained: “The Egyptian sleep method involves sleeping under a damp sheet, which cools off from evaporation.” As water absorbs heat during evaporation, body temperatures should drop overnight. The Egyptian sleep method can also involve sleeping in minimal or no clothing. However, some variations of the method suggest alternative techniques.

Those not keen on a towel can also wear a damp T-shirt to bed instead. Ensuring that bedrooms are well-ventilated also helps prevent the trapping of excess humidity.

The expert added when Brits should be careful with the trend, warning: “Just don’t over-wet the sheet!”

People adopting the technique are recommended to wring the towel out thoroughly so that it is damp and not dripping wet. To absorb excess moisture and protect mattresses, households can also lay down a breathable mattress protector or a dry towel.

It should also be noted that prolonged exposure to damp fabric is not recommended, as it can cause skin irritation, especially for those with sensitivities such as eczema.

The psychiatrist went on to explain exactly when is best to use the Egyptian sleep method: “This method is most likely to benefit those without AC who live in an arid (dry) region with high nighttime temperatures. It might also be a good option for people who are trying to cut back on their energy use.”

He added: “The more our body temperature drops overnight, the deeper we sleep.”

Other cooling methods Brits can use this week before sleeping include a fan directed near your body or using breathable linen or cotton bedsheets.

Although seemingly counterintuitive, Dr Dimitriu also recommends taking a warm bath before bed.

The expert explained that raising your body temperature before bed and then cooling it can lead to a deeper rest.
