Prince Harry opened up about his big “regret” when he introduced his wife, Meghan Markle, to his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began dating in 2016, before getting engaged in 2017 and marrying the following year.
In 2023, Harry released his bombshell memoir, Spare, where he opened up about various moments in his life. One of those moments was in 2016 in Royal Lodge, Windsor, when he had to introduce his then-girlfriend to the monarch.
The Duke revealed that while the overall meeting was “pleasant” there was one thing he and his wife inevitably regretted.
He wrote in his book: “There was some bloke [a friend of Sarah Ferguson’s] standing to the other side of Granny, and I thought: Bogey at twelve o’clock.
“Meg looked to me for a clue as to his identity, but I couldn’t help – I’d never seen him before.”
He then added: “[Princess Eugenie] whispered into my ear that he was a friend of her mum’s. Ah, OK. I looked at him hard, ‘Brilliant. Congratulations on being present for one of the most consequential moments of my life.’”
Harry then revealed that he and his wife may have been too casually dressed for the occasion.
The prince wrote: “Granny was dressed for church: a brightly coloured dress and a matching hat.
“I can’t recall the colour, I wish I could, but it was bright. Fancy. I could see Meg regretting her jeans and black sweater.
“I was also regretting my shabby trousers. We didn’t plan, I wanted to tell Granny, but she was busy asking about Meg’s visit.”
Another revelation about the meeting was that the late Queen asked Meghan about her opinion of Donald Trump, who was US President for the first time at the time.
He wrote: “Meg thought politics a no-win game, so she changed the subject to Canada.”
