A fire is burning at a recycling centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey, sending thick black smoke across parts of London and causing major disruption to rail services. Dramatic eyewitness accounts have emerged from commuters travelling past the scene, with one passenger claiming their train filled with smoke and that people screamed as it passed the blaze.
The London Fire Brigade says 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters are at the scene tackling the fire, with two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders being used to fight the flames from above.
In a statement, the Brigade said: “Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a fire at a recycling centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey.Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.Two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders have been deployed to the scene to help fight the fire from above. Control Officers took the first of multiple calls at 1732 and have mobilised crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations to the scene.”
