Chaos has been reported at Gatwick Airport in London after sinkholes were discovered, leading to the closure of all train lines between Purley and East Croydon. The Gatwick Express is also suspended and isn’t expected to run until Monday morning.
Passengers have been seen waiting outside the airport. Southern Railway said: “A message from Southern Railway added: “Urgent repairs are needed to a bridge at Purley, resulting in all lines at this station being closed. Trains are currently unable to run to/from or through this station, and will be cancelled or revised.” The company is also urging people not to travel.
It has been confirmed the disruption is being caused by the discovery of sinkholes near a railway bridge in south London.
Gatwick Express services will only run between London Victoria and East Croydon, another update read. A message shared by Gatwick Express on X read: “All lines are blocked between Gatwick Airport and East Croydon. Gatwick Express services will be altered and you may need to change onto more than usual trains.” The Gatwick Express from Victoria is suspended, and it is understood the line is expected to be out of use at least until Monday morning.
