Queen Sonja of Norway has broke her silence just days after her daughter-in-law Crown Princess Mette-Marit‘s surgery. The 52-year-old underwent a lung transplant last week, with her health having been seriously compromised recently due to the progression of her pulmonary fibrosis.
The royal, who has been married to Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway since 2001, now has to use supplemental oxygen and has significantly restricted her official engagements. Upon leaving a recent royal engagement in Kristiansand, Norway’s sixth-largest city, Queen Sonja made sure to comment on her daughter-in-law’s recent surgery, telling awaiting reporters: “It’s simply fantastic.”
She then added her delight at how well the surgery went, adding: “t’s fantastic that it went so well.”
Following news of her surgery, she was reportedly reunited with her son Marius Borg Hoiby, who has been convicted of rape, hours after undergoing lung transplant surgery.
Last week, Mette-Marit’s son was found guilty on two counts of rape and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Scandinavian magazine Se og Hor claimed last week that Marius has “consistently been visiting his mother” over the past few days despite being in prison.
As per HELLO!, Marius was allegedly “smuggled” into Oslo University Hospital through a back entrance to avoid photographers.
The Crown Princess’s son, who was born from a previous relationship and is not deemed a royal figure, has been in custody since his trial concluded on February 1.
He was convicted of raping two women, one at Crown Prince Haakon, his stepdad’s, Skaugum estate, in 2018 and and another one in Oslo in 2024.
He was also convicted of abusing an ex-girlfriend, Norwegian influencer Nora Haukland.
