She broke some British hearts after overcoming Harriet Dart 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Ostapenko overcame the wildcard with her usual aggressive tennis that saw her hit a huge 46 winners compared to Dart’s 13. Her ruthless play on her forehand and backhand left the spectators at Court No. 1 and at home astonished. However, even more eyebrows were raised when people spotted who was sponsoring her tennis kit.
The famous British supermarket chain was emblazoned at the top of her top. It would be an understatement to say those on social media who were watching her victory were left surprised by the sponsor.
They wrote: “Ostapenko is sponsored by Tesco?!? Ahahaha, thats the best sponsorship deal I’ve ever seen. Just the concept of Penko picking out a meal deal for lunch every day.”
Another added: “Ostapenko and her Tesco live to fight another day,” before a third said: “Some great event-specific advertising at this years Wimbledon.”
While her Tesco sponsorship amused many on social media, Ostapenko did not have many fans on Court No. 1. In fact, many spectators jeered and booed the former World No. 5 during the match.
These crowd reactions were not lost on the Latvian, who made that abundantly clear in his post-victory interview. Playing into her role as the pantomime villain, she said: “I know guys, I’m probably not the one you wanted to win, but thanks guys for a very nice atmosphere.
“Sorry if I was a little bit emotional, but I feel like first rounds are so tough, especially when the opponent is from here. It’s funny, I feel like when I play somebody local or somebody the crowd supports, I feel like I’m angry inside in a good way.
“I want to prove wrong that you’re not supporting the right person. I feel like I want you guys to support me in the next match!”
