Detectives investigating the shock shooting of a 16 year-old boy in a UK city – as the nation watched England battle to victory in their World Cup crunch tie – have issued a major update. The teen suffered severe gunshot wounds just before 5.30pm on Bowyer Road in Alum Rock, Birmingham, on Wednesday evening around the same time England were playing the first half of their game.

The boy was taken to hospital to be treated for “potentially life-threatening” gunshot injuries and was found near a mosque – although police claim “at this stage we do not believe the shooting to be connected to this place of worship.” Now cops have confirmed a 17 year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

West Midlands Police officers remained at the scene of the alarming incident on Thursday morning as investigators continued looking for doorbell camera footage, witnesses and CCTV.

Detective Inspector Francis Nock from our Major Crime Team said: “Our investigation is continuing and I would urge anyone who might have seen something or has dashcam or doorbell footage to get in touch.

“Officers will be in the area today to offer reassurance to the local community.”

Birmingham city councillor Majid Mahmood said he was related to the victim, adding the attack felt “incredibly personal”.

Mahmood, a councillor for neighbouring ward Bromford and Hodge Hill, said: “Like so many across the community, I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that has taken place in Alum Rock.”

He said his “thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time”.

Mahmood added the family’s “one heartfelt request” was that people did not share any photos or videos from the scene. He said anyone with footage or information should instead send this directly to police to help the investigation.

“At times like this, our community is strongest when we come together with compassion, dignity and respect,” he added.
