Jordan Henderson shares statement from hospital bed after surgery | Football | Sport

England star Jordan Henderson has given fans an update on his recovery following surgery on his broken wrist on Wednesday. The 36-year-old broke his silence on social media for the first time since going under the knife, after sustaining a freak injury at the World Cup.

Henderson has since rejoined England’s squad in Kansas City following the successful procedure on his broken wrist. The Brentford stalwart confirmed the operation went smoothly and expressed his gratitude to the hospital staff following his unfortunate injury after the victory in Mexico City.

Henderson posted on Instagram: “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one on Saturday. Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City orthopaedic institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation. Dr Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr Mark J Winston, Dr Kirk McCullough.”

England colleagues Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rogers were swift to rally behind their injured team-mate, posting heart emojis in the comments section. His club Brentford also offered their well-wishes, writing: “Speedy recovery Jordan!”.

The experienced Henderson has now made his way to Kansas City to lend his support to the group ahead of their quarter-final showdown with Norway on Saturday. His presence will undoubtedly provide a significant lift to the squad, given his status as one of its most well-liked figures.

Henderson sustained the shocking injury after leaping over advertising hoardings and landing awkwardly while celebrating with supporters following their 3-2 triumph over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. He needed oxygen as he was stretchered away by medical personnel before subsequently being taken to hospital in the capital.

This follows his first public comments since the harrowing incident at the Azteca on Sunday evening. Henderson said on Tuesday: “A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges,” Henderson said on Instagram. “So proud to be a part of this special team [emojis]. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”

Henderson has expressed his wish to remain with the squad to provide moral support and has maintained regular contact with his fellow players. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament, even should England reach the final, having suffered a broken radius in his forearm.

According to the BBC, head coach Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to ban his players from leaping over the advertising hoardings following the injury setback. The German manager will be desperate to prevent any further unnecessary injuries — particularly those sustained off the pitch — as England bid to reach their first final in 60 years.

They face Erling Haaland’s Norway on Saturday, with a potential semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland to follow. Should Tuchel’s side progress past the last four, either France or Spain are likely to stand between them and glory at the New York New Jersey stadium on July 19.
