An 18-year-old has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the river at Darley Abbey. Five fire engines and three water rescue units were dispatched shortly after 12.46pm on Friday, July 10.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two individuals had got into difficulty while swimming in the waters. A younger teenager is understood to have been pulled from the water shortly before 4.30pm. However, the 18-year-old’s body was recovered shortly after 8pm, Derby City Council confirmed.

Police officers are now said to be offering support to the man’s family. Cllr Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all those affected by the incident at Darley Abbey on Friday afternoon.

“We are saddened to hear of this tragic loss of life, and our hearts go out to the family, friends, and the whole community during this incredibly difficult time.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of our inland waterways. Even during warm weather, rivers present unique hazards that are not always visible from the riverbank.”

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it dispatched crews from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Buxton and Belper, who were joined by personnel from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Highfields fire station. A spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to reports of two people in difficulty in the water after a 999 call was received by our control room at 12:46 hours today.

“Five fire engines and three water rescue units are at the scene, including crews from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Buxton and Belper.

“They are joined by firefighters from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Highfields station. Derbyshire Constabulary and East Midlands Ambulance Service are also in attendance.”

The two teenagers are understood to have been swimming in the weir near the Darley Abbey Mills complex. The incident comes just weeks after a man in his 30s needed urgent medical treatment after getting into difficulty in water near Darley Street.

The man was pulled from the River Derwent before being transported to hospital.
