Manchester United have secured the signing of 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham in a deal worth £4million, with a potential further £4million in add-ons. The youngster is highly regarded within academy circles and is poised to be given first-team opportunities at Old Trafford, having caught the eye during his time in North London last season.
Thompson first joined Tottenham‘s academy at the age of 12 and netted seven goals in seven appearances in the UEFA Youth League last season, while also featuring twice as an unused substitute in the Champions League. The agreement for the England Under-18 international also incorporates a 15 per cent sell-on clause, with United having assured the teenager he will have every opportunity to break into the first-team set-up at Old Trafford. The add-ons are believed to be tied to Thompson’s first-team accomplishments at United.
Upon confirming the transfer, a United statement read: “Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young winger Tynan Thompson, subject to registration. The England youth international has joined from Tottenham Hotspur.
“The 18-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18s to Under-21s level, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games. His performances earned him opportunities within Spurs’ first-team matchday squads.
“Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
Thompson becomes United’s fourth signing of the summer after free agent Karl Darlow, £50million midfielder Andrey Santos who arrived from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans, who set the Red Devils back £35million in joining from Aston Villa.
After the four, Cristian Orozco will become the fifth signing after turning 18 last week. United have not yet announced his arrival but the player has already arrived in England to acclimatise.
The Colombian youth international was welcomed to Manchester back in December, where he was given a tour of the club’s Carrington training base and Old Trafford and trained with the academy teams.
Defensive midfielder Orozco, like Thompson, will first join United’s Under-21 team with the aim of being promoted to the first team in the years to come.
United’s director of football Jason Wilcox said last week: “The hard work continues behind the scenes to prepare his [Michael Carrick’s] first-team squad for next season.
“We can all be proud of the winning culture that is developing at Carrington as we continue to build a talented and determined group of players ready to compete across all four competitions.”
