Meghan Markle asked to be addressed simply as “Meghan” during her appearance as a ‘mystery judge’ on MasterChef Australia. The Duchess of Sussex appeared as a surprise guest judge on the Australian edition of the cooking competition, where judge Poh Ling Yeow welcomed her by asking: “Do we call you Duchess?” Meghan quickly replied: “Oh, call me Meghan. Absolutely.”
The stars of Good Morning Britain discussed her request to not be called ‘Duchess’ in their latest show on Monday morning. Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway were joined by Vanessa Feltz and Terry Christian to debate the day’s biggest talking points and they discussed Meghan’s request not to be called ‘Duchess.’
Kate said: “She served up more than just judging. She revealed her kids eat brussel sprouts and she no longer wants to be called duchess. It’s certainly whipped up headlines all around the world, hasn’t it?”
As reported by the Mirror, Richard then took a swipe at Meghan and said: “If she doesn’t want to be called duchess, why did she say, ‘Cook me a meal fit for a duchess.’ You can’t have it both ways.
“Mind you, Meghan Markle tries to have it both ways all the time, doesn’t she?”
He later also said: “Meghan insisted that she did not want to be called duchess when she appeared on the show, after reports that she was unhappy about claims that the tour with Harry was cashing in on their royal links.”
Vanessa Feltz added: “And also, we all saw on With Love, Meghan when she said to Mindy Kaling, ‘Why are you calling me Markle? It’s Sussex now.’ She very much likes to be called Sussex.”
Richard Arnold concluded: “So, Meghan Sussex, but definitely not duchess.”
During the episode, Meghan opened up about the different food preferences she and Prince Harry have. She explained that her husband, having grown up in the UK, tends to enjoy meat, potatoes and cream sauce.
As “a California girl”, she shared that she likes grilled fish, meats and citrus with natural herbs and spices. However, she revealed that one thing they both enjoy is a little extra heat, with the couple sharing a love of spicy flavours. She said both of their children, Archie and Lilibet, were “great eaters”, and that they even enjoyed eating Brussels sprouts.
“Hi, my love,” she said after she was handed the phone and then introduced Harry to contestants and judges and showed him the dishes.
“My husband’s here,” she also told the crowd.
After the FaceTime call she said: “He’s a charmer, isn’t he?”
The episode was filmed during the couple’s week-long trip to Australia in April.
