Many thought the Italian would have entered this week’s Canadian Open to give himself the chance to make history by winning all nine Masters 1000 events in a single calendar year, as he has already won the first five of the season. But Sinner skipped Montreal and is expected to return in Cincinnati late next week.
However, ahead of the North American swing, reports have emerged that Sinner twice visited medical clinics in Italy. Last week, the five-time Grand Slam champion headed to the J Medical in Turin and was seen wearing a patch on his knee, sparking concerns.
Now, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Sinner visited the Physioclinic on Via Fontana in Milan on Tuesday morning, a physiotherapy evaluation and treatment facility. The 24-year-old was joined by four members of his team as he completed checkups and left around midday.
This is said to be regular protocol for Sinner, who has plenty of points to defend in the second half of the season and will want to protect his body heading into the North American hard court swing. However, it is not known whether the checkups in Milan were related to his knee.
The Italian then completed tests related to his heat tolerance before heading to the All England Club, where he defended his title with a four-set victory over Alexander Zverev in the final.
“[They] were general tests to see health-wise how I was, to be sure that all is okay with the body, which is. All tests were really good,” Sinner explained when he first arrived in Wimbledon.
“Even though we are very sure we need to practice in hotter conditions. I feel like everywhere where we play is going to be very hot. Every year is getting warmer and warmer. It’s a very important topic.”
