The UK’s cheapest supermarket has been revealed for the latest month. It comes as a consumer group, Which? compared prices of 93 popular grocery items across eight retailers to find out which one would come out on top. Milk, cheese, and sliced bread were some of the goods included in the study, with it combining own-brand and branded products to provide a realistic idea of shopping costs, and the best had a bill of just £158.05.
Which? found Aldi to be the cheapest supermarket, beating its counterparts once again. German supermarket giant Lidl followed close behind with the same shopping list coming up to £160.70, whilst Asda did quite well, beating the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury’s loyalty prices.
The study found that a trolley roll of Asda’s everyday prices cost £185.81, which is cheaper than the same shop at Sainsbury’s using Nectar Card prices. The retailer’s bill came up to £187.86. Similarly, Tesco’s Clubcard prices were higher than those of both Asda and Sainsbury’s, at £188.45.
However, for shoppers who are not signed up to Sainsbury’s or Tesco loyalty schemes, the shopping total proved to cost much more. Tesco’s regular prices got the bill up to £195.63, which cost the same as an identical shop at Morrisons. At the same time, Sainsbury’s was even more expensive at £197.85.
When it comes to the most expensive, Waitrose remains at the top, with customers paying £226.95 for their goods – £68.90 more than the cheapest store.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor hopes that shoppers will think more carefully about where they pick up their groceries, as, despite inflation remaining “stable for now,” it is likely that UK households will be cautious about potential price hikes.
Ms Sewraz added: “The discounters are still the cheapest supermarkets, while Asda beats Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s loyalty scheme prices according to our analysis.”
Which? noted that 25 products were on loyalty discount at Sainsbury’s during the study period, while Tesco had 23 items reduced for Clubcard members.
In contrast, there were no loyalty discounts available at Morrisons, Waitrose, or Lidl for the products included in the analysis.
