As the UK looks set to be plunged into a big freeze, UK motorists have been warned to pack their cars with essential items. The Met Office has issued several weather warnings for the UK from Monday, February 2, until Thursday, February 4, alerting Brits in certain areas to rain and snow.
It comes as the nation has been experiencing multiple days of harsh weather conditions in recent weeks. While most of the weather agency’s recent alerts have warned Brits of heavy rain and potential flooding, the Met Office has warned people in certain areas of snowfall.
Rainfall across the South of England is predicted to bring risks of flooding and road closures, whilst from midnight to 3pm on Wednesday, sleet and snow are expected to bring disruption across Scotland. While the warning has also been issued for only certain parts of the nation, the Met Office advises Brits to check local weather forecasts regularly, as warnings can update quickly.
Along with disruption, heavy snowfall and heavy rain can pose many hazards, especially for those who need to travel in such conditions.
The Met Office urges people to avoid travelling where possible, but if necessary, to take precautions, including allowing extra time for journeys.
As well as the weather agency, British Gas has also provided advice on how Brits should get prepared for heavy snow.
British Gas said: “De-icer, scrapers, wiper fluid and anti-freeze will all come in handy if you need to drive during a cold snap.
“You might even want to keep some jump leads in the boot in case your car doesn’t start.
“And before going on any journeys, make sure you’ve got some food, water, a torch, your phone and charger, plus a blanket or two with you.”
The essential items recommendations has also been echoed by the Met Office, which stated: “If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).”
As well as preparing a car kit, drivers should also check for road closures, as this can often be the case during harsh and wintry weather.
