British Gas giving customers half price electricity for Christmas | Personal Finance | Finance

British Gas is giving customers across the UK the gift of half price electricity this Christmas.

The UK’s biggest energy supplier, which serves more than nine million homes and businesses, is offering the discount through its PeakSave scheme.

Households can enjoy some festive savings between 11am and 4pm on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, when electricity will be half price.

British Gas ran the same offer last Christmas and paid out £1.4 million to customers who took part in the money-saving event.

Catherine O’Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy, said: “This festive season we wanted to give back to our customers once again. We know that so many of them appreciated the half price days last Christmas whilst they were spending more time at home with loved ones.

“It’s no surprise that our PeakSave scheme has been a huge success – it helps customers save on their energy costs while also contributing to a greener grid. We’re expecting that to continue throughout the winter and look forward to welcoming even more customers to PeakSave.”

The December 25 and 26 half price offer is available to both new and existing British Gas customers on any tariff and the firm says there’s no obligation for households to change any energy habits.

But those who are keen to save on the pennies throughout December, and into 2025, can continue to get half price electricity every week with the supplier’s ‘PeakSave Sundays’ and ‘Green Flex’ events.

PeakSave rewards customers who use electricity away from peak hours – from 11am to 4pm – when there is less demand, or more renewable electricity available on the grid, in bid to encourage greener energy use.

British Gas says the initiative has helped 700,000 customers save money and use cleaner, greener energy this year, with more than £15 million in household savings made so far.

Customers can sign up for PeakSave no matter what tariff they are currently on and will get half-price electricity every Sunday, as well as during PeakSave Green Flex events.

During the five hour event you can use as much electricity as you need in these hours and it’ll be half price. And if you’ve signed up to PeakSave, you’ll be automatically included every Sunday so you don’t need to opt in.

You do have to opt in to the Green Flex events and British Gas will notify you when one is coming up. During these events you’ll get half-price electricity for one or two-hour bursts.

By using electricity during these off-peak hours you can earn credit towards your electricity bill or meter and make big savings throughout the year. It’s free to sign up online and British Gas will email you within seven to 10 days confirming if you’re eligible to take part.
