EDF Energy is continuing its ‘Sunday Saver Challenge‘, offering UK households the opportunity to enjoy ‘free electricity’ on Sundays across January and February. The scheme rewards eligible customers who reduce their electricity consumption during weekday peak hours, which run from 4pm to 7pm.
The greater the amount of energy customers shift to off-peak periods, the more complimentary electricity they can receive the following Sunday. This could amount to between four and 16 hours of no-cost power on four designated Sundays starting from January 2026.
Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “January is a time when many people look for new ways to save after the festive period, so we’re delighted to resume our Sunday Saver challenge.
“Over 210,000 customers have been rewarded with free electricity as a result of adjusting their daily usage habits, reducing their carbon footprint and taking steps to contribute to a more sustainable electricity grid.”
The EDF initiative arrives as millions of households face higher energy costs this winter. Ofgem’s energy price cap increased by 2% between October and December, followed by a further 0.2% rise from January 1. As a result, typical dual-fuel households paying by Direct Debit will now pay approximately £1,758 annually.
Those wishing to take part in the Sunday Saver Challenge will require a working smart meter for their electricity and must consent to half-hourly meter readings. Registration opened and closed on Sunday, January 4, at 11:59pm, with the challenge commencing today, Monday, January 5.
EDF has confirmed that participants can utilise their earned complimentary electricity on four Sundays, which are:
- January 18
- January 25
- February 1
- February 8
Participants can monitor their progress via EDF’s Energy Hub, accessible through ‘MyAccount’. Further advice on EDF’s website explains: “You should be able to earn free electricity quite easily by making small changes to your energy habits.
“For instance, everyone in the house can charge up their devices outside of peak times; you can put the dishwasher on in the morning; or do a bit of batch cooking at the weekend.
“Go to Energy Hub in MyAccount to see when you use most electricity. Here, you can also keep track of your carbon savings and free electricity. We know changing habits can be tricky, but we hope you’re up for the challenge!”
