Campaign group Extinction Rebellion (XR) has begun protest in Home Park near Windsor Castle, with three days of action planned close to Prince William and Princess Kate‘s Berkshire home.
Promoting the three-day demonstration on their website, XR said they chose to have the royal residence as a backdrop as it “perfectly symbolises an out-of-date system in urgent need of change”.
Windsor MP Jack Rankin has voiced concern over the potential for “significant disruption” during event, which began on Friday. Mr Rankin called on the council to be ready to take “legal action” if protesters don’t move when the schedule wraps up.
But organisers of the protest said they they aren’t planning to cause any public disruption with a series of performances and debates organised over the weekend.
The “centrepiece” of the protest will be a “mass assembly” were activists can debate and vote on how they think democracy could be improved in the UK, XR says.
