Private Eye editor and Have I Got News For You star Ian Hislop was reportedly “shot at” while travelling in a taxi in London.
The broadcaster and journalist, 64, was in the black cab in central London when a suspected gunshot struck the back of the car.
Neither Mr Hislop nor the taxi driver was injured.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 10.10am on Tuesday, 1 October to a report of a firearms discharge on Dean Street, Westminster.
“The driver of a London black taxi reported he was stationary in traffic when a shot was fired towards his vehicle, striking the window.
“There were no injuries. An investigation has been launched.”
Dean Street is close to Private Eye’s central London offices.
Roads in Soho were shut throughout Tuesday, as police combed the area, while officers will also look through CCTV footage.
Born on July 13, 1960, Hislop has been editor of the satirical magazine since 1986, making him one of the most influential voices in British media.
Under his leadership, the Eye has become renowned for its investigative journalism, witty critiques of public figures, and lampooning of political corruption.
Hislop’s commitment to holding power to account has earned him a reputation for fearlessness.
He also also faced multiple libel suits over the years.
Since the show’s inception in 1990, Hislop has become familiar for his sharp wit, biting commentary, and brusque approach to discussing current affairs, along with fellow team captain Paul Merton.
He has also written and presented programmes such as Ian Hislop’s Scouting for Boys, which examines the history of the Scout movement, and The Wipers Times, a drama about a satirical newspaper created in the trenches of World War I.
The first episode of series 68 of HIGNFY is scheduled to be broadcast on Friday evening at 9pm.
Express.co.uk has contacted the BBC to make sure that this will still happen.
