‘I’m a fire expert – here’s a cleaning job that could prevent a housefire’

With spring cleaning season in full swing, more than 90% of Brits are set to take part in tidying up their homes. However, fire safety experts are warning that certain overlooked areas could pose a risk. According to Carlos Duhney, a fire safety specialist and owner of Telcam, 54% of all house fires are caused by domestic appliances, many of which could be preventable with proper maintenance.

Dust Buildup in Electrical Appliances

Dust accumulation inside electrical appliances, including plug sockets, heaters, and behind televisions, can ignite and start a fire. 

Duhney said: “Dust might seem harmless, but it can pose a serious fire risk when it settles inside electrical appliances like plug sockets, heaters or behind TV’s.

“When dust accumulates in these areas, it can ignite and lead to a fire. Make sure to get into all of the gaps and hidden spots when doing your dusting this spring to ensure there is no dust build-up. Even better if you can make this into a regular routine.”

Overloading Plug Sockets and Extension Cables

Many people are guilty of plugging too many devices into a single outlet, which can lead to overheating and fires. “Spread appliances over multiple sockets rather than overloading one,” says Duhney.

He also recommends using extension cords with surge protection to protect from the risk of sparks flying.

Grease and Grime Buildup on Cooking Appliances

Cooking appliances are a major fire hazard, with 44% of house fires in the UK linked to them. Grease and grime buildup in ovens and stoves can ignite when heated.

While cleaning the oven is a dreaded task for many, Duhney stresses its importance for both fire safety and hygiene.

Even with the most diligent cleaning habits, fires can still occur. A burning smell or unexplained smoke coming from an appliance is an immediate red flag and should be addressed by turning off the device and checking for any issues.

If plug sockets, cables, or appliances feel unusually hot to the touch or show scorch marks, they may be overheating and require further inspection.

Frequent circuit breaker trips can also signal an electrical overload or faulty wiring, which poses a serious fire hazard.

Additionally, buzzing or crackling sounds from outlets or appliances may indicate an underlying electrical issue that needs prompt attention.

By addressing these often-overlooked risks, homeowners can reduce the chances of fire-related incidents and keep their households safe during and beyond the spring cleaning season.
