Speculation about Salah’s future has been swirling for a while now, even after the Egyptian signed a new two-year contract extension last April. In light of Salah’s impending departure, reports are beginning to surface detailing Liverpool’s potential plans to replace the 33-year-old this summer.
The Daily Mail has reported that Liverpool have already initiated their succession plan for Salah, with representatives of several players being contacted regarding a possible move this summer. It is yet to be determined which players Liverpool might target to replace Salah – who has netted 255 goals during his stint at Anfield – this summer, as numerous wingers and wide forwards have been linked over recent months.
Salah has frequently been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the past, with the Saudi Pro League often cited as a likely destination. Back in the summer of 2023, Liverpool rejected a £150million offer from Al-Ittihad, and there are rumours that the Saudi club could make another bid to sign the Egyptian this summer.
The previously mentioned report from the Daily Mail has also suggested that clubs from the Saudi Pro League were keen on signing Salah during the January transfer window, and would have been prepared to pay £100million for his services. Salah shared an emotional video confirming his departure from Liverpool on Tuesday, where he delivered a message to the club’s supporters as well as his team-mates, past and present.
“Hello everyone. Unfortunately the day has come,” Salah said. “This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life.
“Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club.
“We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates past and present.
“And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career and you stood by me in the toughest time. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.
“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
