Lloyds Bank has clarified how customers can access its services following the end of a key offering. The group clarified the rules after a customer asked a question on social media.
The person contacted the bank on behalf of their 92-year-old neighbour who had a cheque from the DVLA that they wanted to cash in, for his late wife’s car tax.
They explained that their neighbour does not have internet or a smart phone, and that their local Lloyds branch had closed. They had tried their local banking hub, but they apparently wouldn’t accept the cheque.
Banking hubs were set up to continue to provide basic banking services in areas where high street branches are closing. They are run by the Post Office.
Guidance on the Post Office website states that you can pay in cheques at these centres. The advice states that services include: “Pay cash or cheques into your account, take out money and check your available balance.”
Lloyds responds
In response to the query, Lloyds said: “Cheques can be paid in by post if they’re going into a Lloyds account.” The bank also directed the person to guidance on its website about how to pay in cheques.
Another person chimed in on the conversation, pointing out that Lloyds recently changed its rules so you can no longer pay in cheques over the counter at the Post Office.
From January 1, 2026, Lloyds Banking Group scrapped the service to pay in cheques over the counter at the Post Office. This includes paying in cheques for accounts with Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland.
However, Lloyds clarified that this is not the case at all branches. The group explained: “You can still pay in cheques at many Post Office branches, but you can also deposit cheques using our mobile banking app. You can deposit a cheque using the mobile banking app.”
You can pay in cheques of up to £10,000 each, or a total of £10,000 each day. You can use the app to input the details of the cheque and then take a picture of the front and back of the cheque.
The advice is to keep hold of the cheque until the funds have gone through. Then you can destroy the cheque. Some cheques you cannot pay in through the app. The app will tell you if this is the case.
