A grass fire erupted near Heathrow Airport, prompting reports of the closure of one of the air hub’s runways. A picture on social media shared by a traveller shows thick smoke rising near the airport, as online reports suggested runway 27L had been shut.
X user James Wade wrote on the platform: “I’m not known for breaking news… but there’s a fire near the runway at Heathrow which is delaying all flights… here’s my view from the terminal…” Heathrow Airport confirmed a fire had erupted “adjacent” to the southern runway, but said both runways are operational. The airport spokesperson also apologised for “any disruption caused as a result or while emergency services completed their safety checks”.
