Manchester United were denied victory against West Ham on Thursday evening after Soungoutou Magassa struck late for the visitors. The home side were frustrated for much of the match as ex-United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka sparkled for the Hammers. And Red Devils star Ayden Heaven blew his big audition after replacing the injured Matthijs de Ligt at the heart of the backline as he was booked after eight minutes and hauled off at the interval.
United took the lead just before the hour mark as Diogo Dalot was picked out by Casemiro in the penalty area before thumping the ball past Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola. But the hosts were unable to hang on for the win as Magassa lashed the ball into the net seven minutes before the end after United failed to deal with a corner. And Express Sport rates and slates the United players.
Manchester United player ratings vs West Ham (3-4-2-1)
Senne Lammens: 6
Has been solid in between the sticks since arriving in the summer and has established himself as his team’s No. 1. Didn’t have too much to do and wasn’t able to keep out Magassa’s effort when called upon.
Noussair Mazraoui: 6
An important player when fit and slotted on the right side of defence. Kept it simple in possession but could have tried to have more of an impact in the final third as the Red Devils attempted to break down the visitors.
Ayden Heaven: 5
Filled in for De Ligt at the heart of the back three as Leny Yoro dropped to the bench. Was dragged out of position early on and was handed a booking inside the opening 10 minutes. Struggled to deal with Callum Wilson after being cautioned and was replaced by Yoro at the break.
Luke Shaw: 8
Produced another strong performance as he showed his quality on the ball and made a decent block in the opening period. Bailed his team-mates out a number of times and is an asset to his side when he’s fully fit. Had the chance to put United ahead just before the hour mark but fired off target.
Amad: 5
Whipped in a decent cross in search of Joshua Zirkzee just after kick-off as United started quickly. Thought he should have had a penalty moments later. Was dangerous at times but was inconsistent and can’t always be relied upon to produce the goods.
Casemiro: 5
Made a crucial block in the early stages of the clash as West Ham attempted to get the upper hand. But was off the pace at times and lacked authority. Kobbie Mainoo will believe that he can do a better job in the centre of the pitch.
Hungry to get involved in his side’s attacking play as he created a string of chances for his team-mates. Couldn’t finish off a fine move with a Paolo Di Canio-esque scissor kick in the first-half. Went off the boil as the match wore on and looked tired.
Diogo Dalot: 6
Seems to be one of Ruben Amorim’s favourites and started on the left flank once again. Had no joy against Wan-Bissaka in the first-half but kept pushing and popped up with the opening goal of the evening. Was taken off soon afterwards.
Bryan Mbeumo: 6
Ran his socks off and was dangerous throughout but lacked an end product. Curled a sumptuous effort towards goal midway through the first-half, but saw his shot tipped over by Areola. Not his best match and failed to score for the third match in a row.
Matheus Cunha: 5
Returned to the United team following an injury layoff and looked rusty. Tried to get involved in his side’s attacking play but lost the battle against Wan-Bissaka as the Englishman produced a world-class performance. Will need to get up to speed if he is to keep his place in the side.
Joshua Zirkzee: 7
Was rewarded for his goal against Crystal Palace at the weekend by keeping his place up front, despite the fact he struggled for much of the game at Selhurst Park. Headed an effort off target in the closing stages of the opening period and picked out Mbeumo with a fine pass after the break. Looked a lot brighter than he did on Sunday but can still offer more in front of goal.
Substitutions
Leny Yoro: 7
Was dropped after conceding a penalty against Crystal Palace but came on for Ayden Heaven at the interval and immediately shored up the defence.
Patrick Dorgu: 5
Came on for goalscorer Dalot with just over 20 minutes remaining but didn’t do enough at either end of the pitch.
Manuel Ugarte: 6
Hasn’t had much game time under Amorim but was called into action late on as Matheus Cunha made way.
Mason Mount: 6
Will be disappointed not to have started as he had to settle for a 12-minute run out. Was clattered by Wan-Bissaka immediately after coming on.
Lisandro Martinez: 6
Came on in the closing stages for Luke Shaw.
