Martin Brundle experienced one of the strangest grid walk interviews of his career ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, interviewing ‘Mr Unicorn’, a Chinese influencer dressed with a unicorn head. The Sky Sports F1 presenter was navigating a quick grid walk when he discovered the influencer.
“There’s an unusual character… Xue Zhang,” he said before approaching the unicorn cosplayer. “Hello, Martin Brundle here from Sky, tell us about you,” he introduced himself. Zhang replied: “I’m Mr Unicorn from China! I’m looking for the fastest man alive over here.”
Mr Unicorn then unveiled a scroll containing “traditional Chinese typography” that read: “Fastest man alive”. Asked who he thought that was, he shouted: “[Lewis] Hamilton!”
Brundle then pointed the influencer in the direction of Hamilton’s starting grid slot, which Mr Unicorn appreciated. The influencer then set off, go-pro in hand, towards the Ferrari driver’s entourage.
Brundle, in a more conventional interview, also spoke to Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur. His drivers, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, both struggled in qualifying and were resigned to P5 and P6 grid slots.
“It’s a good picture yesterday but it’s difficult to say what happens,” Vasseur said, assessing Ferrari‘s chances. “It’s very tight. I think we were in good shape yesterday on the long stints, and we can have a good race.”
Vasseur was also asked about Hamilton’s sprint race victory. The seven-time world champion fended off Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen to claim his first win as a Ferrari star on Saturday.
“It’s a good milestone for the season, his own confidence, the team,” the Ferrari chief responded. “Now let’s be focused on the future, so we are focused on today.”
